Why do they depend on their husbands to take care of it all? I'd hate to be stuck in a marriage because I couldn't provide for myself. It happens to so many women. I know learning about finances is boring, but how else can you ensure your own future. The only one who will always take care of you completely is you. Money isn't everything but you do need a backup plan.
are you a victorian?
If your husband is there for you and can provide for you and the children, why not? That's a lot of women's dream (whether they're willing to admit it or not). We have many professional female friends who give up their career as nurses/teachers/engineers, not because they want to depend on their husband, but because that's what they chose. Family is more important than money. Women can be educated and still stay at home. Money isn't everything.
it is up to the individual couple who takes responsibility - some people are good with money others are not - three out of my four kids are great with money - two females and 1 male but my youngest daughter for some reason is hopeless and her husband takes control of the purse otherwise no bills would be paid etc she is happy with this arrangement, I have control over my finances but then I have to as alone
Agreed. Given the odds of divorce, it would be a risky proposition to let your husband take care of all of your finances while your skills in the job market atrophy. If something bad happens, it will make it all the more difficult for you to get back on your feet, so keep your mind and your abilities sharp.
it is because women's instinct is to spend more and save less..
There are some answers that I do not agree to especially the one right above mine by Cyrus V. I think it comes from the fact that some women have a successful career, gets married and have kids and decide that they rather be at home to take care of the kids and see them grow up. I know that women are usually more capable than men when it comes to taking care of the familiy. It is just in the genes. I, for one, am a career woman and I completely agree with you that we need to be financially independent. As my boyfriend always teased me about it...I like to think that "Just in case...." Just in case, in the future, my husband decides to divorce me? Just in case, in the future, my husband beats me and due to me financially dependant on him, I cannot leave him? I just like to be safe....... It is not that I am saying that all husbands cheat or beats their wives....but I like to have a safety net to go to when anything bad happens to me, I can just depend on myself.....
